Start with the correct size
A well-fitted filter matters more than choosing a high rating in the wrong dimensions. Read the nominal size printed on the current filter frame.
MERV 11 is a common starting point
For many homes with pets, MERV 11 offers a practical balance for pet dander, pollen, and everyday dust. Some systems can support MERV 13, but higher filtration can add resistance, so verify compatibility first.
Pet hair and pet dander are different
Visible fur often settles before reaching the filter. Dander is much smaller and can stay airborne. Regular vacuuming, grooming, and cleaning return grilles work alongside the HVAC filter.
Check more often
Homes with shedding pets may load filters faster. Inspect the filter monthly and replace it when dirty rather than waiting for a fixed date.
