How Often Should You Change an HVAC Air Filter?

Many 1-inch filters are checked monthly and replaced about every 60–90 days. A home with multiple pets, construction dust, wildfire smoke, or heavy system use may need a shorter interval. Thicker media filters may last longer when the cabinet and manufacturer instructions allow it.

Change it sooner when you notice these signs

• The filter surface looks heavily gray or loaded with debris.
• Airflow from supply vents feels weaker than usual.
• Dust returns quickly after cleaning.
• The HVAC system runs longer or sounds strained.
• Smoke, renovation dust, or pet shedding has recently increased.

Use the filter, not the calendar, as your final guide

Set a reminder, then inspect the filter. Replacement timing is not identical for every home. Follow the filter maker's instructions and your HVAC documentation.

Simple routine

1. Write the installation date on the filter frame.
2. Check it after 30 days.
3. Replace it when visibly loaded or at the recommended interval.
4. Save the size and MERV rating for the next purchase.
